A spa inside a casino hotel needs a recognizable identity of its own. At Ameristar Black Hawk, that work included the name itself. Design practice GIRVIN describes developing Ara with Ameristar’s spa consultants, then extending the identity through the logo, signage, printed materials and packaging.

A name that travelled through the building

GIRVIN says the name refers to the southern constellation Ara and the Latin word for altar. The design team used that association to frame the spa around rituals of relaxation and self-care. This is a documented branding decision, rather than evidence that the spa follows a particular historic religious practice.

The distinction matters because names can suggest an atmosphere without establishing cultural provenance. Here the source identifies the creative team and its rationale. It also explains the practical range of the commission: the same identity had to work at an entrance, on a small printed item and on packaging.

GIRVIN reports that the identity was subsequently introduced at Ameristar St. Charles. The spread of the name shows how a concept developed for one resort can become a shared hospitality brand. It does not make the two spas physically identical.

The brand has a precise place in the hotel

Ameristar’s current Black Hawk spa page locates Ara on the hotel’s ninth floor. It lists treatment rooms and relaxation amenities including a hydro-pool, sauna and steam rooms, and asks visitors to keep phones off in locker, relaxation and treatment areas.

Those operational details give the design story a physical context. The identity marks a destination within a larger vertical resort, while the etiquette supports a quieter environment once guests arrive. Ara’s interest lies in that connection between naming, wayfinding and the way a room is used: a small word becomes part of a coordinated guest experience.
