Rivers Casino Des Plaines announced LEED Gold certification on 15 March 2012, following its July 2011 opening. Its archived statement includes details that are more informative than the award alone: daylight openings, water-saving fixtures and a substantial construction-material recovery programme.
Daylight entered through the upper envelope
Skylights and clerestory windows were part of the original design, bringing natural light into the building. The statement also records LED lighting in the parking garage and other areas, along with low-VOC paints and adhesives. These decisions affected different parts of the visitor and employee environment rather than forming a single decorative feature.
The operator reported a 40 percent water-use reduction from low-flow fixtures and sensor-controlled faucets. It also reported that 90 percent of construction waste, more than 70 million pounds, was recycled or reused on site. These are figures from the 2012 certification announcement. They should not be presented as newly measured 2026 performance.
Redevelopment required sequencing as well as design
Development Management Associates describes work on a 21-acre site that included moving existing tenants, environmental remediation, demolition and recycling. The firm says those activities were sequenced to prolong revenue generation while preparing the site for construction.
DMA’s credits identify Klai Juba as architect, CLEO Design and DMAC for interiors, and Pepper Construction as general contractor. The account makes the environmental achievement a coordinated project rather than the work of an unnamed designer.
One further historical detail deserves care: the 2012 statement described green-power offsets for 70 percent of electricity over a two-year period. That is a bounded commitment, not evidence of an indefinite supply arrangement. Keeping dates and measurement periods attached to environmental claims lets readers appreciate the original building strategy without mistaking it for a current operational audit.
