Grand Casino Bern occupies a building complex whose history reaches well beyond its gaming floor. The Kursaal began as a summer inn and accumulated places for music, theatre, meetings and overnight stays. Following those additions makes the present-day casino easier to understand: it belongs to a long-running business of gathering people in one place.
From a hillside inn to specialised halls
The Kursaal’s own chronology starts in 1859–60 with a chalet-style summer inn designed by Bardy + Conod. A music pavilion, terrace extension and hall with a stage followed in 1873–74. Albert Gerstler’s 1914 project added a concert-hall wing, lift tower, foyer connection and gaming hall. In 1933, another Gerstler wing brought a chandelier hall together with theatre and meeting spaces.
The most revealing later entry is less photogenic. In 1973, renovation of the chandelier hall included six interpreter cabins, a wireless simultaneous-interpretation system and a widescreen, as well as a new chandelier containing 384 bulbs. Conference equipment and decorative spectacle were being renewed together. The building was adapting to audiences who needed to hear several languages, not simply admire a room.
A modern casino within an older complex
The casino’s historical account places the opening of the modern Grand Casino in 2002 and describes a substantial enlargement for its tenth anniversary. Its floor reached roughly 1,500 square metres and the entrance was redesigned. The same account records the end of the Kursaal’s long tradition of the table game boules in 2002. Those dates distinguish the modern operation from the much older leisure setting around it.
Architecturally, the chronology offers a useful way to read a mixed-use venue. A familiar name can survive while rooms change purpose, technology changes and new wings alter circulation. The significance lies in the sequence of adaptations, rather than an assumption that every interior belongs to one original design.
Today, the operator identifies the casino as being on the fifth floor of the Kursaal and gives its address as Kornhausstrasse 3, Bern. Its current visitor page lists year-round operation. Those present-day details complete the historical picture: the casino is a specific destination within a larger hospitality and events complex, with its own entrance arrangements and admission requirements.
