On Blackpool’s South Shore, the word “casino” can lead to two different buildings. Grosvenor G Casino is recorded by the council at the Sandcastle on the Promenade. The Casino at Blackpool Pleasure Beach is a separate listed architectural landmark associated with Joseph Emberton.
The council’s gambling-premises register identifies the operating venue at The Sandcastle, FY4 1BB. Historic England’s entry describes the Pleasure Beach building as a reinforced-concrete design of 1937–40 by Emberton for Leonard Thompson, with later alterations by Keith Ingham.
How the circular building worked
The listed building’s plan was organised around central kitchens serving restaurants below and a banqueting room above. Curving rooms surrounded that service core. The original roof garden was later enclosed and altered, while the exterior’s thin spiral tower gave the low circular composition a vertical accent. Historic England also records a ship-like chimney and long curved window bands.
The Twentieth Century Society’s architectural account explains that the Pleasure Beach Casino and its predecessor were not intended or used for gambling. Here, the historic name belongs to a broader entertainment tradition. It should not be used as evidence that today’s Grosvenor operation occupies Emberton’s building.
The kitchen-led plan offers its own insight into seaside leisure architecture. A visually striking circular exterior was supported by a practical arrangement for feeding people in several rooms. Service circulation and public spectacle were closely connected, even when the visitor primarily noticed the tower or sweeping windows.
For readers exploring the area, accurate naming preserves both stories. The Sandcastle address identifies the licensed casino; the Pleasure Beach landmark offers a separate modernist history. Keeping those records apart prevents a striking heritage photograph from being attached to the wrong property, while still allowing the neighbouring buildings to explain the varied entertainment landscape of the seafront.
