Royat’s Rotunda: How Media Servers Turn an Entrance into a Moving Interior

A casino entrance has several jobs. It welcomes people, helps them find their destination and establishes the mood of the interior. Royat’s Rotunda made those roles unusually visible in a renovation documented in 2021, when the room’s columns and arches became surfaces for a programmable LED installation.

The project account from media-server manufacturer Modulo Pi dates the reopening to 19 May 2021. Scenery and lighting designer Jean-Philippe Corrigou developed the installation, with Kinesik supplying and integrating the LED walls. Around 120 square metres of custom display surface were distributed across columns and the upper arches.

A room with more than one visual role

The technical arrangement used two Modulo Player media servers under a Crestron control system. The supplier describes a range of possible content, including immersive sequences, directional information, restaurant menus and live sports. Those capabilities reveal the central design idea: the same architectural surfaces can carry different kinds of material.

A decorative sequence encourages attention to the room as a whole. Directions ask the visitor to extract a specific piece of information. A live feed introduces an event happening somewhere else. Each use changes the relationship between a person and the display, even when the physical LED tiles remain in place.

This is why the control system matters as much as the brightness or size of the screens. A moving interior depends on content preparation, routing and playback. The visual effect is produced through a continuing relationship between the built surface and the material sent to it.

Architecture becomes a display format

Columns and arches are also more demanding surfaces than a single rectangular screen. Content must respond to their proportions and separation. An image that works across an uninterrupted wall may need a different composition when broken between vertical supports and curved upper elements.

Royat’s example is useful because it makes that relationship concrete. The room’s existing spatial rhythm remains relevant to how the digital material is encountered. The installation adds another way to articulate the entrance rather than making the architecture irrelevant.

A contemporary layer in a thermal setting

The municipality’s heritage account describes Royat’s thermal district along the Tiretaine valley. The local tourism description of the park places the casino and thermal buildings within that landscape. Against this longer architectural setting, the Rotunda provides a clearly contemporary layer.

The documented installation is best understood as a 2021 design project, not a guarantee that a particular sequence plays today. Its lasting interest is the mechanism: an entrance can become a changing interior when architectural surfaces, media production and building controls are designed to work together.
