Spielbank Hohensyburg belongs to a different architectural story from the converted palaces associated with some European casinos. Dortmund’s official anniversary chronology records the opening of Harald Deilmann’s building on 28 June 1985. Its interest lies in how a large leisure complex was fitted to a landscape above the Ruhr, rather than in the adaptation of an aristocratic residence.
A building broken into levels
The baukunst-nrw architectural record, published through the regional architects’ and engineers’ chambers, describes a brief that included social events as well as gaming. It identifies terracing, a varied arrangement of building volumes and a limitation on height as responses to the surrounding recreation area.
That account also names the principal facade materials: Obernkirchen sandstone, bronze-coloured lightweight metal and mirrored glass. Below the building, three underground parking levels formed part of the access arrangement. A central interior connected the different activity levels, rather than leaving them as separate destinations.
Taken together, these details suggest a building understood in section as much as in elevation. The stepped outline addresses the setting, while the central interior negotiates movement between uses. This is an architectural reading of the published description. It does not establish environmental performance or prove that every part of the original internal arrangement survives unchanged.
Architecture as a subject in its own right
Hohensyburg has also been presented to the public as architecture. Curator Stefan Rethfeld’s record of a September 2021 heritage-day tour identifies a city-organised visit developed with the casino operator. It describes the complex beside the Hohensyburg ruins and places Deilmann’s work in the period 1981–1985. This is evidence of a past architectural programme, not an announcement of tours currently available.
The distinction keeps two histories visible: the building’s design and its continuing operation. A cultural interpretation can explain why the terraces, materials and internal connections deserve attention without treating the premises as a museum open on demand.
The landscape remains part of the programme
The current SYGHT restaurant service page describes a panoramic terrace with an accessible connection to the restaurant, with the possibility of extending private events outdoors. This is a present-day example of the wider landscape serving an everyday hospitality function.
The casino’s current service page confirms Hohensyburgstraße 200 in Dortmund and publishes opening and arrival information. Anyone researching the building should use those live details, and confirm the particular spaces they wish to enter, rather than relying on an old tour notice.
