At Montecasino in Fourways, Johannesburg, a garden is more than the greenery between entertainment buildings. The Bird Gardens has its own spatial organisation: walk-through habitats, planted routes and an amphitheatre create different ways of watching living things. This evergreen landscape feature examines that organisation, rather than treating the attraction as another item on a long casino-resort facilities list.
A compact site with different viewing modes
Landscape practice Landmark Studios describes its Bird Gardens project as a creative use of a compact area. Its account identifies an amphitheatre as the focal point, alongside aviaries that include immersive walk-in spaces. It also places the planting in deliberate visual relationship with the birds’ colours. Those are useful clues to the design: the landscape provides both a setting and a sequence of viewpoints.
An amphitheatre concentrates attention towards a common performance area. A walk-through habitat distributes attention instead, allowing different people to notice different movements at different moments. Putting both in one attraction creates a contrast between a shared presentation and individual observation. That contrast is an interpretation of the documented layout, not a claim that either format produces a particular educational outcome.
The plant collection has its own identity
The operator’s Bird Gardens page lists a South African cycad collection as a distinct feature, alongside a parrot gallery, frog room, reptiles and mammals. It also describes a walk-through aviary where birds share space with small mammals and reptiles. The garden therefore has subjects at several scales: canopy, foliage, flying birds and animals closer to the ground.
That variety changes how a visitor might look. Moving quickly between conspicuous animals could make the planting seem incidental. Slowing down to compare leaf forms and the relationship between paths and enclosures reveals a second collection. The design invites attention to the container as well as its inhabitants, even when one is initially more visually arresting than the other.
A distinct landscape within the precinct
The current Montecasino site identifies the operating casino, hotels, theatres and Bird Gardens at Montecasino Boulevard in Fourways. The Gauteng Tourism Authority’s attraction profile independently places the gardens within that entertainment complex and highlights the main aviary and cycads. Together these sources establish the relationship without reducing the garden to decoration for the gaming building.
For readers interested in landscape design, the useful question is how the route alternates between directed and open-ended attention. Where does a path frame a view? Where can several species or layers of planting be read together? Where does seating turn movement into a pause? These questions offer a more specific reading of the Bird Gardens than a species total, and remain worthwhile as individual animals and displays change.
