The Star Sydney Casino: the property and its location

Property and location research updated 26 October 2026.

A precinct on the Pyrmont foreshore

The Star Sydney is a hospitality and entertainment precinct on the Pyrmont foreshore, combining casino operations with hotels, restaurants and live performance spaces. Its accommodation choices include hotel rooms, apartment style residences and The Darling's boutique hotel setting. Those distinctions help explain why visitors can have different experiences within the same complex. A theatre audience, a conference delegate and an overnight guest may use different entrances and facilities. The property is best understood as a collection of connected destinations rather than a single room with gaming tables and a hotel attached.

Different dining identities

The operator's precinct overview names BLACK Bar & Grill, Sokyo, Cucina Porto and Fat Noodle among its restaurants. Their stated identities range from steak and contemporary Japanese food to Italian and Southeast Asian cooking. This variety is more useful for planning than a claim that the complex has restaurants: the intended meal, atmosphere and service format will differ by venue. Some dining operations belong to partner precinct operators, so a restaurant's reservation arrangements should not be assumed to match the hotel's. Confirming the venue also avoids confusing a precinct visit with a casino visit.

The hotel address and its surroundings

Darling Harbour's official precinct directory places The Star Grand Hotel at 80 Pyrmont Street. Its listed facilities include a pool, gym, spa, restaurants and conference spaces, illustrating the hotel component's broader purpose. The address is useful because a complex can also be approached from its waterfront side; a theatre destination may provide a different street number. When arranging a meeting or transfer, naming the hotel or venue is more precise than simply requesting The Star. Harbour and skyline views feature in the hotel's presentation, but the outlook of an individual room should be confirmed rather than inferred from promotional photographs.

Sydney Lyric and adaptable theatre design

Sydney Lyric opened in 1997 and is operated by Foundation Theatres. Its history includes major musical productions and Australian world premieres, making live theatre a part of the precinct rather than incidental casino entertainment. A 2018 renovation introduced an auditorium that can change between four seating configurations, from 1,350 to 2,000 seats. The theatre explains that acoustically transparent walls allow this change without technically reconfiguring the production. For audiences, the principle is a closer relationship between stage and seating at different scales. It also means that a single maximum seat count does not describe every performance's arrangement or the experience of every ticket holder.

A theatre built within a theatre

Foundry Theatre adds a more intimate performance space within the Sydney Lyric. Foundation Theatres created it from an underused backstage area originally intended to hold sets for repertory opera and ballet. Because the Lyric had not been used for that repertory model, the space offered an opportunity for conversion rather than a separate building. Foundry opened in February 2025. Audiences enter through the Lyric foyers and share facilities including the box office and bathrooms. Its story is an example of adaptive reuse inside an entertainment complex: existing backstage infrastructure became a second venue for theatre, music, comedy and other events.

The scale of the Sydney Event Centre

Sydney Event Centre occupies the top storey of The Star Sydney and serves a different purpose from the seated Lyric auditorium. Doltone House's venue information describes a configurable space for concerts, banquets, talks and exhibitions, with integrated audiovisual, lighting and outside broadcast capabilities. Its published capacities distinguish up to 960 banquet guests, 768 in cabaret format and 2,200 for cocktails. These figures should not be treated as interchangeable. Tables, stages and production equipment alter how a room functions. The distinction is relevant to business visitors comparing an awards dinner with a standing reception, even when both are advertised at the same venue.

Arriving by rail or water

The Sydney Lyric's transport guidance locates its entrance within The Star at 55 Pirrama Road. The L1 Dulwich Hill light rail line stops at The Star, providing a useful orientation point for the complex. The theatre also identifies Pyrmont Bay Wharf on the F4 ferry service as a nearby approach. A ferry arrival and a light rail arrival do not deposit visitors at the same doorway, so following venue signs remains important. These connections make the precinct accessible without assuming a private car is necessary. Current service information should still be checked for the intended journey, around evening performance finishing times.

A dated regulatory distinction

The casino's operating status requires precision. In its announcement of 25 September 2026, The Star reported that its Sydney casino licence remained suspended and that the appointed manager's term had been extended to 30 June 2027, unless ended earlier. The attached NSW Independent Casino Commission statement explains that the arrangement allows gaming facilities to continue operating while the suspension remains in place. Suspension therefore should not be described here as closure of the whole precinct, nor should continued operation be mistaken for restoration of the company's licence. This dated distinction is relevant background, separate from the availability of hotel rooms, restaurants or theatre performances.

Pyrmont as a working waterfront

The Australian National Maritime Museum helps explain the district around The Star. Its account identifies the site's Gadigal traditional owners and describes Darling Harbour's later role in maritime trade, immigration and cargo handling. Rail sidings, storage buildings and workshops once occupied large areas of the western waterfront. Containerisation subsequently shifted much port activity elsewhere, leaving the district to be transformed into cultural, residential and visitor spaces. This history provides a counterpoint to the contemporary hotel and entertainment landscape. The museum is a separate institution in Darling Harbour, not a resort attraction, and its waterfront setting makes the change in land use tangible.

Public space at Pirrama Park

Pirrama Park shows another outcome of the peninsula's transformation. The City of Sydney purchased the former water police site in 2005 and developed a public waterfront park through consultation and design work. Its promenade follows the original shoreline, while Stevedore Walk recalls the wharves and their workers. Sandstone elements refer to Pyrmont's quarrying past, and native planting reconnects the landscape with the peninsula's vegetation. These details make the park more than a patch of green beside the harbour. It offers a publicly accessible perspective on local history, balancing the commercially managed spaces of The Star with a shoreline intended for community use.
