Shorelines Casino Thousand Islands: the property and its location
Property and location research updated 26 October 2026.
Shorelines Casino Thousand Islands
Shorelines Casino Thousand Islands is the operator’s Gananoque-area property at 380 Highway 2. The casino is a land-based destination, not a floating venue or an island attraction. Its Shorelines identity links it with other Ontario properties, but visitors should check this location’s own operating and dining information rather than borrow details from Belleville or Peterborough.

What changed in 2016
Great Canadian announced completion of the East Gaming Bundle acquisition on 11 January 2016. The transaction included the existing Thousand Islands casino, formerly identified as OLG Casino Thousand Islands, along with Kawartha Downs operations and a proposed Belleville development. This was a change in operation and ownership arrangements, not the first opening of a newly constructed Thousand Islands casino. The distinction matters when comparing older photographs, reviews or business names. The historical release describes the partnership and its plans at that moment; it does not establish today’s floor layout, staffing or service availability. For practical visitor questions, the current property listing should take precedence over the acquisition announcement.
The name reflects a regional brand
The Shorelines brand was announced in December 2015, before the transition was complete. The company explained that the name referred to the communities’ connections with their geographical settings. That is a branding rationale rather than a promise that every property sits directly on the riverbank. It also explains why historical material may use several names for the same Thousand Islands destination. Keeping the address alongside the name is the simplest way to avoid confusing a casino visit with an island cruise or a national-park excursion. Promotional descriptions in the announcement should be treated as the operator’s positioning, not independent evidence of superior hospitality or a particular customer experience.

Gananoque’s history goes beyond tourism
The 1000 Islands History Museum places the region’s natural landscape alongside Indigenous history, European arrival, conflict, industry and tourism. Its permanent exhibition acknowledges Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee presence and describes how mills developed along Gananoque’s shorelines in the early nineteenth century. Later visitors arrived by rail and ship, and seasonal tourism became an important part of the town’s identity. This layered account is a useful counterweight to seeing Gananoque only as a departure point for sightseeing boats. The casino belongs to the contemporary visitor economy, while the museum helps explain the older relationships among river transport, manufacturing, settlement and leisure. Neither attraction substitutes for the other.

A walking tour follows changing buildings
The town provides heritage-walking-tour information in English and French, with brochures available through the visitor centre or town hall. It also links to the history museum’s digital tour, which uses archival photographs to show how buildings have changed over two centuries. This format rewards looking closely at streets and structures rather than rushing between headline attractions. A building’s former use may be very different from its present business, so older names should not be read as current operating descriptions. The walk is an independent public-history experience, not a casino service. Plan for weather and the specific chosen route, and respect the distinction between viewing a building from outside and entering private premises.

The river’s working boats
The Thousand Islands Boat Museum interprets regional history through boats, restoration and a collection displayed partly on the water. Its visitor page describes indoor and outdoor galleries, a boat-shop café, children’s activities and a boathouse containing antique craft. The museum is therefore more than a static display of photographs: its subject is the practical relationship between people and the river. However, the published 2026 schedule states that the boathouse exhibition and café are closed from 4 October until May 2027. That seasonal closure matters for an autumn itinerary. It should not be confused with a closure of the casino, nor should year-round administrative work be mistaken for public exhibition access. The museum identifies most public areas as accessible and provides accessible washrooms, while noting that nearby waterfront parking includes paid spaces.

Two theatres with different past lives
The Thousand Islands Playhouse operates two distinctive buildings. Its Springer Theatre occupies a former canoe-club building dating to 1909, with a modern auditorium behind a historic waterfront exterior. The nearby Firehall Theatre is a flexible black-box space in a building that served military, fire and police functions before becoming a theatre venue in 2004. These are separate performance spaces, so the correct address and seating plan depend on the production. Their histories also illustrate how Gananoque has adapted older civic and recreational buildings for cultural use. A theatre evening can complement a wider visit, but tickets, performance times and accessibility arrangements are independent of the casino. The Playhouse lists 350 seats in the Springer and 130 in the Firehall. Those different capacities reinforce the importance of checking which space hosts the intended production.

Autumn theatre has a defined season
The regional tourism organization lists the Playhouse’s 2026 season through 7 November. Its autumn programme includes Come From Away at the Springer Theatre from 22 September to 7 November, while Wonderful Joe at the Firehall ended on 4 October. Naming those dates prevents an earlier production from appearing to be available indefinitely. The tourism page also describes theatre and production-facility tours during the season, but specific departures require confirmation. The useful distinction is between a venue that exists year-round and a performance or tour that runs only on selected dates. Visitors combining several activities should choose the actual event first, then arrange transport and meals around its timetable.

The national park is a separate landscape
Thousand Islands National Park is distributed across mainland locations, islands, islets and shoals rather than enclosed behind one entrance. Its management plan identifies Landons Bay, Mallorytown Landing and Jones Creek as distinct mainland visitor areas. Island visits generally require boat access, and some places have no visitor facilities because of ecological or cultural sensitivity. The plan also distinguishes higher-service destinations from more basic settings with different expectations for waste, docks and overnight use. This is important context for anyone adding nature to a Gananoque stay. A casino address does not provide access to the park, and a view of the river does not mean every visible island is public land. Mallorytown Landing is described as a key river-access point with picnic areas and a boat launch. Jones Creek and Landons Bay offer different mainland trail experiences rather than interchangeable facilities.
